Water Alternatives! Did You Know?

Did you that we should try to drink 1.5 - 2 litres a day - that's about six to eight 250ml cups or glasses? But did you also know that it's healthier to make as much of this as possible plain water but there are other forms of fluids that count?
All the flavoured or sparkling waters count, as do fruit juice, squash, lemonade and other fizzy drinks.
You must although watch your sugar intake (even some of the most innocent looking clear 'waters' have high calorie levels due to added sugar), but this is a completely separate issue .
The only drinks that don't hydrate on an equal footing with water are caffeinated drinks such as tea, coffee, cola, and alcohol.
Alcohol is particularly bad because it actually causes you to lose water - for every 125ml glass of wine you lose 150ml of water - whereas caffeinated drinks act as a much milder diuretic.
Here's a good rule of thumb, you need three caffeinated drinks to be the equivalent of two glasses of water, but this may over-exaggerate their diuretic properties. They will only act as noticeable diuretics in people who drink them rarely - probably because they 'shock' the system. People who drink tea an coffee regularly and in normal strengths don't experience the same diuretic effects, which means that they can be counted as valid contributors to water intake too. Being a coffee lover this news was good to me!
Water is more important than you think. Our bodies are 60% water by weight. Water controls our hormones, and research has proven that "a fluid loss of even a 2% of body weight will adversely circulatory functions & decrease performance levels." (nasm textbook, 3rd ed., p 441) If you're trying to lose weight, you need even more water, "an additional 8 oz for every 25 lbs you carry above ideal weight." (nasm textbook, 3rd ed., p440).
