Healthy Kitchen Substitutions! Did You Know?

Did you know you could add body to sauces and soups without using cream? Yes all you have to do is dissolve 1 tsp. of arrowroot or corn flour in a Tbsp. of water.
Cook it in the sauce for 4-5 minutes. You can also add to add 2-3 Tbs. of pureed cooked vegetables such as carrots, celery or onion to thicken soups.
This trick is known to work really well.Try using soy instead of cream cheese or sour cream.Just blend silken tofu, into dips, dressings, or believe it por not frosting.
Fresh garlic turns soft and buttery when roasted.Just cut the tops off the garlic heads, spray lightly with olive oil and wrap the entire head in foil and bake at 180ÂșC for approx. 45 minutes or until tender. thren squeeze out the soft cloves and spread on bread, whisk into soups or dips, or mash with potatoes, no need for butter.Roasted garlic should last approx. a week in the fridge.
No Mayo for You ~ Instead of using high fat mayonnaise, you can try pureed cottage cheese or silken tofu, with a mix of water, Dijon mustard, cider vinegar and pepper.
Reduced Avocados ~ This is a good one - When a recipe calls for avocados (which contain good fat but lots of calories), replace some of the avocado with pureed asparagus blended with yogurt, in fact, see this recipe for Asparagus Guacamole.

Chicken instead of pork or beef for meatballs, ask your butcher for minced chicken. Ground turkey, but turkey is very lean, so your meatballs might be on the dry side( I usually ad some  water to moisten).

Great substitue for butter in your baking, use flavorful ingredients that add moisture to the batter.Pumpkin or sweet potato flesh, applesauce, mashed banana, fresh orange juice or other pureed produce work really well and taste great too!
