Healthier Natural Nails! Did You Know?

Did you know that fingernails are composed of keratin, which is a protein? The nails grow outward from their base, where the cuticle lies. There are several problems that can arise with fingernails, including dryness, brittleness and cracking. Unusual coloring, ridges or dents in the nails are issues that may be symptomatic of an illness or infection. It is essential to properly care for your nails so these conditions do not arise and so your natural fingernails will grow strong.

Step 1

Clean your nails regularly to keep them growing healthy and strong. Use a tool specifically made for nails to remove dirt from under them. Wash them gently afterwards, and pat dry.

Step 2

Trim your nails regularly. For best results keep them at a short length, shaped square but slightly rounded at the top. Do your trimming following a 15-minute soak in bath oil.

Step 3

Wear rubber gloves when you are going to have your hands in water for prolonged periods of time. Soaking in plain water can weaken your nails.

Step 4

Moisturize your hands and nails with a product specifically designed for nails. Dab on moisturizer after your hands have been in water, and lather it on at night prior to bed. Put on cotton gloves to help seal in the moisture, and wear them overnight.

Step 5

Polish your nails with a thin coating of product. This extra layer will help seal moisture into the nails. You may also use a nail hardener, but the Mayo Clinic advises avoiding products containing formaldehyde or toluene sulfonamide.

Step 6

Resist the temptation to pull off a hangnail. Trim off the segment with clippers instead. If you rip off the nail with your teeth, you are likely to remove living tissue along with the offending nail piece.

Step 7

Banish your bad habits right away to help your nails grow strong. Do not use your fingernails as a tool. Leave your cuticles alone; do not let a manicurist remove them because nail bed damage is likely to occur.

Tips and Warnings
Limit your use of polish remover to once a week or less. This is a harsh product that can weaken your fingernails. Choose a remover which does not contain acetone, as this chemical can dry out your nails.
Ensure your manicurist uses sterilized tools when working on your nails. Stop biting your nails if this is your habit. They cannot grow if they are bitten down, and there are many germs in your mouth which could lead to infection if they get into nicks in the skin. See a physician immediately if you develop pits in your nails, curving, extreme discoloration or separation of the fingernail from the nail bed.
God Bless!
